What Do You Get When You Cross a Marketing Expert With a Pseudo- Scientist? By Michael Collins

..................................................................................

A Fad Diet!

Anyone who has tried to lose weight over the years has undoubtedly been bombarded with fad diets. A fad diet is basically a "weight loss" diet in which a marketing expert teams with a pseudo scientist to generate a product or way of eating that is not backed by science.

These "weight loss" diets come with such outrageous claims as "lose 10 lbs. of fat in 5 days!”

They'll tell you that all you have to do is eat boiled cabbage for a week. (Warning: Don't stand in an elevator with anyone eating nothing but cabbage for a week. Your nose will thank me later)

This weight loss method is absolutely ridiculous, but in the marketing world, it is sheer brilliance.

There are many people out there looking for the quick fix. These unscrupulous marketers feed their own pockets by manipulating the

minds of the unsuspecting public.

Everyone wants be in great shape for the summer, and this is the time of year where we become prime targets for the fad diet marketers.  Who doesn't want to lose a few pounds and look great on the beach?

Everywhere we turn we can hear someone say that they are on a "diet".

Now, what are the first three letters of this word?

Doesn’t sound very fun huh?

In actuality the word diet doesn’t mean eating any less calories or any other specific way of eating. Diet is what you consume everyday whether it is 1,000 calories or 5,000 calories. We don’t need to go on a traditional diet to lose that unwanted fat. We need to make wise decisions about what we eat.

With the plethora of misinformation out there regarding proper eating and weight loss, it can become confusing and even outright frustrating. Many of the fad diets tend to favor one macronutrient over another.

The macronutrients are the 3 calorie containing nutrients: protein, fat and carbohydrate. One expert says to eat only carbohydrates, while another one says to eat all the fat and protein you want, just avoid carbohydrates at all costs.

Who’s right?

Well, the fact is you need all three macronutrients to maintain proper functioning and stay healthy.

That’s right, you need fat.

Somehow fat has over the years gotten to be a dirty word. The fact is that without fat in your diet, you would lose nerve functioning, have brittle hair, nails and skin, and eventually die.

What many people have not learned is to choose the "good fats", unsaturated fats which actually help to reduce the threat of cardiovascular disease, and numerous other problems. Without fat, you would also fall deficient in the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K.

Also, diets shunning carbohydrates can leave you flat, irritable, and sluggish. The body acclimates by fueling the body and brain with ketones- a very inefficient source of energy. This is the equivalent of

Filling the gas tank with mud!

Any weight loss diet that lowers your protein intake below a safe level is also very dangerous. Every cell in the body is made of protein. You must eat an adequate amount of protein so that each cell can regenerate and repair itself each day.

Muscle is protein. The more muscle tone you have, the more calories you will burn naturally-even in your sleep.

Key Point:

Anytime you are trying to lose weight, you are trying to lose fat. Not muscle or water.

You must take in adequate amounts of the macronutrients to lose fat. Due to the fact that muscle is metabolically active and will burn a lot of calories, one very efficient efficient fat burning strategy is to incorporate moderate weight training and /or high intensity cardio training 3- 4 days per week for at least 30 minutes each session.

This will help stoke the fire, and you’ll be on your way to a lean, toned body for to achieve whatever your goals may be.

What do you think of that diet where you eat certain foods based on your blood type?

I’ve always been told to get a six- pack you need to do a lot of abs work with high reps. Would you agree?

Do I need supplements to lose weight?

Is it possible to lose weight and gain muscle at the same time?

I’ve got fat located in the area of my body where my arm meets my shoulder, and I can’t get rid of it.  Are there any exercises in particular that would help improve that? Or what about any spot reducing supplements?

I know I should be having some protein and carbs after a weights workout, but what about after cardio? I've heard that you should wait 2 hours before eating.

You mentioned the benefits of scheduling a "cheat meal" into your eating program at least once per week. Is there a best time to eat a cheat meal?

Should I be counting my grams of fat, sugar, and calories?

What can I do to flatten my lower abs? I've been doing crunches and hanging leg raises for the last year, but nothing seems to help.
